In a recent escalation of tensions in the Middle East region, Iran’s IRGC detained the MSC Aries, a Portuguese-flagged cargo ship, on April 13, 2024, charging for maritime law violations.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps seized the vessel in the crucial Strait of Hormuz amid increased tensions between Iran and Israel.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry confirmed the ship’s connection with Israel in a statement issued on April 15, 2024.

The incident comes after Tehran’s threat to strike back for what it believed to be an Israeli attack on its consulate in Damascus on April 1, 2024.

Following this incident, Iran issued warnings about the potential closure of the crucial shipping route.

Naseer Kanani, a spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry, claims that the MSC Aries entered the Iranian territorial waters after failing to answer calls from Iranian authorities.

According to Iranian official television, the seizure was carried out by a Guards helicopter that seized the vessel.

MSC, the operator of the MSC Aries, confirmed the seizure and disclosed that it is working with those in charge to ensure the ship’s safe return and the well-being of its 25 crew members.

MSC leased the ship from Gortal Shipping, a Zodiac Maritime affiliate partially owned by Israeli entrepreneur Eyal Ofer.

The recent seizure of the MSC Aries adds to already heightened regional tensions, which have been worsened by Israel’s assault in Gaza and conflicts between Iranian groups and Israeli or US forces in several Middle Eastern nations.

In response to the event, Israeli Foreign Minister Katz accused Iran of piracy, while Israeli military spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari warned of the potential consequences if Iran chose to escalate the situation even further.
