The Haiyang Shiyou 302, a 12,000 cubic meter liquified natural gas transport and refueling vessel, was commissioned in Qidong City, Jiangsu Province, east China.

The vessel, designed to transport LNG and facilitate refueling operations, substantially boosts China’s maritime capabilities.

The Haiyang Shiyou 302 vessel, measuring 132.9 meters long and featuring a deck larger than a regular football pitch, is an incredible accomplishment.

Its larger size enables it to meet the natural gas needs of about 480,000 households for one month, demonstrating its ability to contribute to energy supply chains significantly.

The vessel is multifunctional as it has an electric power system and can navigate both rivers and oceans.

This adaptability is critical for efficiently servicing several maritime routes and destinations.

The vessel’s design comprises two tanks that tower over 20 meters in height, providing enough storage space for LNG transportation and refueling operations.

The vessel’s mast is also designed to fold, allowing it to easily pass under bridges along the Yangtze River and navigate inland waterways.

According to Huang Guoliang, deputy chief engineer of CNOOC Energy Development’s oil production service division, the vessel’s introduction into service is crucial to improving Chinese port service capacity and competitiveness.

Its capacity to efficiently replace natural gas for domestic and international cargo ships and commercial vessels helps promote sustainable practices in the global maritime industry.

China’s CIMC SOE conducted a launching ceremony for the vessel in November last year (2023).

The Haiyang Shiyou 302 is the nation’s first LNG transport refueling vessel to pass the China Classification Society’s (CCS) rigorous construction assessment.

The vessel developer, CIMC SOE, has pledged to work with stakeholders to improve LNG carriers’ expertise, innovative commercial strategies, and compliance with national energy development objectives.

The goal is to support China’s carbon peak and neutrality targets through ongoing technological research and core competitiveness enhancement while contributing to global efforts to decarbonise the shipping industry and foster long-term growth in the national marine economy.
