Kraken Robotics Completes Deliveries And Sea Acceptance Of Mine-hunting Sonar Equipment For Royal Danish Navy

Kraken Robotics has recently announced the successful completion of its deliveries and the fruitful sea acceptance of systems for the firm’s mine-hunting sonar equipment, which falls under the Royal Danish Navy’s unique Minehunting sonar upgrade agenda. The deal was signed in 2020 (September), following a bidding process. Per the deal with the Danish Ministry of Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organization (abbreviated as the DALO), Kraken has been able to deliver four mine-hunting systems. Each of the systems comprises a KATFISH™-towed Synthetic Aperture Sonar, Tentacle® Winch.

These also boast an Autonomous Launch and Recovery System (abbreviated as ALARS), topside command and control equipment, remote operation, and monitoring capability for standoff mine-hunting procedures. Commencing back in 2022, the KATFISH mine-hunting systems got integrated into the Royal Danish Navy’s uncrewed surface vessels (USVs) belonging to the MSF class.

Kraken collaborated closely with MCM Denmark and other workshop technicians and JOBI, a local Danish shipyard, to install Kraken’s DNV design-approved ALARS on the MSF class in parallel with the MSF-class-planned midlife refit.

The firm also integrated the KATFISH system with Saab’s Command and Control (C2) software, giving the operators a smooth experience for mission planning and monitoring. Kongsberg’s Maritime Broadband Radio (abbreviated MBR) facilitates the complete system to function remotely, streaming full and high-resolution sonar imagery in real-time at ranges that exceed the line of sight.

Last year, Kraken entered a seven-year sustainment deal with DALO, with the option for two more seven-year extensions for 21 years of sustainment. The sustainment schedule includes regularly planned maintenance, repairs, and overhauls with the provision for training and adding spare parts and the delivery of capability enhancements through various software updates.

Kraken will deliver additional spare tow cables and two other spare KATFISH tow bodies throughout the year. Kraken has long developed and successfully provided extensive training with the team of MCM Denmark, including Onboard Operator and maintenance, as well as Depot maintenance training certifications. As of this year, the Royal Danish Navy will be completing its first year of KATFISH operations, with an unrevealed massive number of operational hours.
