Evergreen, a Taiwanese container shipping company, has installed the world’s first carbon capture and storage (CCS) system on its Neopanamax container vessel, Ever Top.

This ground-breaking device represents a significant advancement in reducing emissions in maritime transportation since it can handle every step of the CO2 capture process, including absorption, compression, liquefaction, and storage procedures.

ClassNK, a Japanese classification association, has awarded Ever Top its “SCCS-Full” class notation. This confirms that it is the first Neopanamax container ship in the world to be equipped with such cutting-edge CCS systems.

This acknowledgement highlights the vessel’s dedication to technical innovation and environmental sustainability.

The CCS system, created by Qiyao Environmental Protection and installed at Huarun Dadong Dockyard Co. (HRDD), was carefully examined by ClassNK to ensure it adhered to the strict standards listed in “Guidelines for Shipboard CO2 Capture and Storage Systems.”

The method uses amine adsorbents to achieve a minimum CO2 purity of 99% and a phenomenal maximum CO2 capture rate of 80%.

The cooperation between Evergreen and other stakeholders, such as ClassNK, Qiyao Environmental Protection, and HRDD, is essential to the initiative’s success. Their combined efforts have resulted in adopting state-of-the-art technology that improves environmental performance while drastically reducing energy usage.

Onboard carbon capture technologies have come a long way, but there are still issues, particularly the need for shoreside infrastructure for CO2 offloading.

However, Evergreen and its partners’ success establishes a standard for the maritime sector and shows that implementing CCS technology to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is both practical and effective.

Evergreen and its partners were recognised by Masaki Matsunaga, Corporate Officer/Director of Plan Approval and Technical Solution Division at ClassNK, for their innovative achievements in expanding greenhouse gas reduction technology.

He reaffirmed ClassNK’s dedication to promoting proactive decarbonisation by offering suitable certifications, surveys, and standards.
