World’s First Global Maritime Competition

Largest Bulk Carrier In The World

The Pacific Flourish is the largest bulk carrier in the world, a symbol of modern maritime engineering and increasing global demand for efficient, large-scale vessels for transporting raw materials.

It is a second-generation Valemax-class bulk carrier, featuring enhanced environmental performance.

Valemax ships are massive and can access the biggest deepwater ports in Brazil, China and other parts of the world.

Their hulls are reinforced to provide greater strength, and they are powered by a single, two-stroke, low-speed diesel engine coupled to a fixed-pitch propeller.

Valemax ships, including Pacific Flourish, are the most efficient dry bulk carriers, which reduce emissions per ton-mile compared to old vessels.

Pacific Flourish was built in China in 2018 and is owned by the China Merchants Group. It is presently sailing under the flag of Hong Kong.

The largest bulk carrier is 362 m long, 65 m wide and has a gross tonnage of 203,000 tonnes. It is driven by a 32,400 horsepower engine and has a speed of over 14 knots.

Pacific Flourish has a deadweight tonnage of 399,000 tonnes and a 22 m draught when fully loaded.

The largest bulk carrier carries iron ore in its 7 cargo holds from Brazil to major ports in Asia and Europe.

It usually operates on long-haul iron ore routes between South America and East Asia. Its main trade route is from Brazilian ports like Ponta de Madeira or Tubarao, to Chinese ports like Lianyungang, Qingdao, and Dalian.

It crosses the Atlantic Ocean, rounds the Cape of Good Hope and traverses the Indian Ocean, then enters the South China Sea, passing via maritime chokepoints like the Malacca Strait.

In every trip, the ship can carry around 400,000 tonnes of iron ore, equivalent to the load of more than 11,000 trucks, sufficient to produce steel for many infrastructure projects.

The ship’s advanced cargo hold design enables swift loading, up to 13,500 tonnes per hour, and efficient unloading, minimising port turnaround times.

Due to its massive size, this vessel is limited to a select few ports, mainly those equipped to handle Chinamax vessels.

The largest bulk carrier operates with a crew of 21 people, which is normal for modern Valemax and Newcastlemax bulk carrier ships as they are highly automated and designed to operate with minimum personnel.

Pacific Flourish and other Valemax-class vessels enable cost-effective, efficient and safe movement of iron ore, crucial for steel production.
