Introduction to BTech Marine Engineering

BTech Marine Engineering in India is a four-year undergraduate course for those who aspire to become marine engineers. The curriculum includes theory, practical work, and training on board ships or sometimes shipyards. It focuses on teaching students to design, build, operate, and maintain ships and other marine structures.

B.Tech in Marine Engineering

The course covers marine electrical technology, fluid mechanics, applied thermodynamics, control engineering and automation, electrical measurements, marine internal combustion engineering, and more.

The BTech Marine Engineering Course Fee for government colleges and universities ranges between INR 50,000 and 10,00,000. For Private Colleges, it ranges from INR 5,00,000 to 15,00,000.

With some experience on a ship and additional courses, a marine engineer can later progress to the positions of engineer officer, port manager, ship operator, technical superintendent, ship manager, or marine surveyor.

When joining a ship as a trainee engineer as a fresh graduate, they can expect a monthly stipend of $300 – $600 USD or INR 24000 – INR 45000. After clearing the first certificate of competency exam and joining as a fourth engineer, they can expect a monthly salary ranging between USD 1200 – USD 2000 or I, depending on the company they work for, the nature of their work and the type of ship.

Admission & Entrance Exams

IMU CET is mandatory if you want to join DG Certified Maritime Colleges. Also, most colleges have their own CET that you must qualify for, such as the TMI SAT.

After completing the admission process, including passing the entrance exam, group discussion and interview, one goes for counselling.

Eligibility Criteria

1. Education: Students wishing to be admitted to this course must have at least 60% marks in their 10+2 with PCM ( Physics, Chemistry, Maths) as their subjects.

Students should have a 3-year diploma in mechanical engineering or a related discipline from a recognised university to take a lateral entry into the second year of BTech Marine Engineering.

AND

Atleast 50% marks in English Subject in Class 10th or 12th is mandatory.

2. Age: Candidates must be 17-25 on the course’s commencement date.

3. Physical: Candidates must be physically fit under the prescribed norm, including eyesight and hearing, as prescribed in the Merchant Shipping ( Medical Examination) Rules 2000, as amended.

Eye Sight: There should be no proof of any morbid condition of any eye or eyelids of the eyes.

Good binocular vision is a must. The eyeballs must be able to move freely in all directions, and the pupils should react normally to light. Normal colour vision is tested using the Ishihara Test Chart.

Distance Vision unaided 0.5*(6/12) in each eye or 0.67*(6/9) in better eye and 0.33*(6/18) in another eye.

At the time of admission, candidates must show a medical fitness certificate issued by a DG Shipping-approved doctor.

BTech Marine Engineering Sponsorships

Several candidates are unsure if they will get sponsorships to pursue this course. Though not many shipping companies offer sponsorships to BTech Marine Engineering Students, two prominent ones do.

MSC and Maersk offer sponsorships since they have tie-ups with IMI Nodia and AMET University.

The Academy of Maritime Education and Training/ AMET

It is one of the finest institutions offering quality training and education to aspiring maritime professionals.

Students have to pass the national level IMU-CET exam and can apply for admission to this institution. A 4-year BTech Marine Engineering Program here costs around 12.5 lakhs.

To get into AMET with Maersk sponsorship, one must pass the entrance exam and a Psychometric test.

One must also clear IMU CET with a decent rank. After passing Maersk’s interview, a candidate will be admitted to AMET with sponsorship from Maersk.

The eligibility criteria remain the same, except for age. Candidates must be less than 25 years old at the date of the commencement of the course. A relaxation of 2 years is for women candidates and three years for OBC candidates.

International Maritime Institute, Noida

IMI, Noida is another popular name when it comes to maritime educational institutions. MSC has a tie-up with this institution and offers sponsorships to its students.

Clearing IMU CET with excellent rank and good communication skills are the most important factors in gaining sponsorship in this institute. Its BTech Marine Engineering course fee is 19.75 lakhs for the 4-year course.

Some other good colleges that offer this course include-

IMU, Mumbai, also offers many courses apart from B.Tech Marine Engineering. It has an almost 100% placement rate since it takes very few students annually.

IMU Kolkata is another great government institute that selects students based on their IMU CET rankings.

Tolani Maritime Institute also offers a 4-yea BTech Marine Engineering course for 22.83 lakhs. In their final year, students work as interns in a shipping organisation for one semester.

Tolani conducts its own Science Aptitude Test known as the TMI SAT, and the admission depends on the candidates’ performance in the 12th PCM, TMI Entrance Test, Personal Interview, IMUCET and Medical Fitness as per DG Shipping Guidelines.

MANET: Founded in 2001, this institute in Pune trains cadets to join the Merchant Navy. In addition to the BTech Marine Engineering course, candidates can also take a 3-year BSC Nautical Science Course or Diploma in Nautical Science. The institute also has a Ship-in Campus, a fully operational replica of a ship’s engine room.

Although the eligibility criteria are almost the same, they can be checked on the institution’s website.

To get into this college, one must have a good IMU CET rank and decent marks in class 12th with PCM as a subject. After an online exam, the institution conducts an interview.
