Biggest FPSO in the World

The Egina FPSO is operated by TotalEnergies and is the biggest FPSO in the world, in terms of oil storage capacity which is around 2.3 million barrels and a production capacity of 200,000 barrels of oil per day.

This structure is installed 130 km off Nigeria in the Egina Oil Field, discovered in 2003 and situated within the Oil Mining Lease Block 130. It spans 500 square miles and is estimated to have recoverable reserves of 550 million barrels of oil.

Egina FPSO is 330 m long, 61 m wide and 34 m high with a water depth of 1600 m in the Gulf of Guinea. Its topside modules have a gross dry weight of 47,500 tonnes and it also has a 100 m high flareboom and accommodation for 200 people.

The FPSO was built under a 3 billion dollar contract awarded to Samsung Heavy Industries which constructed the vessel at their shipyard in Geoje, South Korea before transporting it to Nigeria for commissioning.

The Egina FPSO has connections to 44 subsea wells and produced oil for the first time in December 1018, now contributing around 10% to Nigeria’s total oil production.

The World’s largest FPSO by tonnage is the MO26 FPSO, constructed by COSCO (Qidong) Offshore Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry Co., Ltd.

It was made to function in ultra-deepwater environments, especially for Brazil’s pre-salt basin projects. It is 335.3 m long, 60 m wide and 33.5 m high.

The FPSO can store up to 1.4 million barrels of oil and has a production capacity of 180,000 barrels of oil per day and 12 million m3 of natural gas daily.

It was constructed in Jiangsu province, China and set sail on December 16, 2024. It broke all records for tonnage towing along the River Yangtze, with a convoy covering 784 metres, including tugboats, escort vessels and patrol boats, ensuring the FPSO’s safety.

The FPSO is often referred to as a floating refinery as it can process massive volumes of oil and natural gas onboard.

It has advanced production systems for handling oil extraction, storage and gas processing.
