Named and delivered by Hudong-Zhonghua, the ‘CMA CGM BAHIA’ features the latest low-carbon shipping technology.

Constructed for CMA CGM, this LNG dual-fuel container ship is just another such ship built by Hudong-Zhonghua. The company also built the world’s 1st LNG dual-fuel powered 23,000 TEU container ship that is consolidating its position in the field of large and ultra-large dual-fuel container vessels.

The latest ship is 336 m long and has a 51 m beam with a 26.8 m depth and a speed of 21 knots, with a maximum capacity of 13,200 TEUs.

The ship has many eco-friendly technologies, including an efficient main engine from China State Shipbuilding Corporation, the CMD-WinGD9X9DF-2.0. It has a new generation ICER system that decreases methane escape in the form of gas by 50 per cent and also decreases emissions of greenhouse gases by over 28%. The ship has an LNG dual-fuel power system and a 14,000 m3 LNG liquid cargo tank.

The container ship saves fuel, thanks to its unique wind flow deflector fitted at the bow that saves two to four per cent of fuel during operations. Another deflector for saving energy is fitted at the ship’s stern, which also improves the propulsion efficiency of the propellor and decreases energy consumption by 1.5 per cent, thereby reducing carbon dioxide emissions.

Packed with features including easy container loading, the latest energy-saving technologies and environment-friendly onboard systems, the ship has been called an energy-efficient container vessel that is set to become the biggest dual-fuel container ship to operate on the South American routes.

During its construction, new digital construction methods were employed, such as VR design, 3D vision technologies, and intelligent lifting modes, to find defects in steel plates and other systems, which greatly improved the quality of construction.

CMA CGM’s core strategy is decarbonisation, and it was the first company to construct LNG-powered container ships. Till now, Hudong-Zhonghua has constructed five dual-fuel container ships for the company and has signed contracts for building five 15,000 TEU container ships, four 23,000 TEU ultra-large container ships and six 13,000 TEU container ships.
