Watch: Massive Fire Engulfs Tanker Carrying Diesel In South China Sea, 2 Crew Go Missing

The oil tanker dubbed the Sheng You 229 caught on fire on Tuesday in the Gulf of Tonkin close to 2:30 PM per Beijing time.

The tanker was loaded with 6,858 tons of diesel oil. The 7,056-dwt ship caught fire in the cargo tanks area. It then spread to the rest of the vessel.

The Qinzhou Maritime Authorities sent its response and dispatched its search and rescue vessels and the coast guard. Current reports mention that of the 17 crew members on board, 15 could be successfully rescued while the remaining are missing.

The fire was extinguished yesterday evening. Reports suggest that an explosion likely triggered the fire.

Per data shared by VesselsValue, Shenzhen Haifa Shipping owns the 2007-built oil tanker.
