Watch: Brand New Luxury Cruise Ship Collides With Vessel In Port Timaru
A brand new luxury cruise ship, Seabourn Encore, collide with another ship at the Port of Timaru in New Zealand after breaking its moorings in the high winds.
In an accident happened during the weekend, the bad weather broke the aft moorings of the cruise liner, leaving it to crash into nearby berthed vessel, Milburn Carrier II.
Phil Melhopt, PrimePort chief executive, said the accident happened on Sunday at about 3.15pm when the southerly wind gusted up to 45 knots.
No injuries were reported, but the vessels sustained some damages. However, reports said there are no breaches and reported water ingress.
The cruise ship, which was nicknamed the “sexiest ship at sea,” was arrived in the Port of Timaru on Sunday morning and was scheduled leave for Akaroa later that evening, reports said.
However, the vessel was unable to leave Timaru as Harbourmaster detained the vessel under his jurisdiction. A Seabourn spokesperson later said ship is fully operational and was cleared to sail by authorities.
Maritime NZ and Transport Accident Investigation Commission have already launched an investigation into the accident.
Lead investigator from Transport Accident Commission, Captain Martin Harper, said they need to understand the situation and causes surrounding this accident so lessons learned can be passed to the transport sector, reports said.
Built by Italy’s Fincantieri shipyard in 2015, Seabourn Encore has length of 211.00 m, moulded beam of 36.00 m and maximum draft of 6.90 m. Christened in January this year, the vessel has a deadweight of 7,000 DWT and gross tonnage of 40,350 GRT.

It was a little hard to tell, but it looked like they only had single mooring lines and springs………why don’t they double up on lines and springs………..i mean to say the sides of these ugly looking things are like huge sails and in high winds the forces involved must be enormous.
