World’s First Battery-Powered Autonomous Double-Ended Ferries Ordered By Fjord1

Fjord1 and Tersan disclosed the shipbuilding deal on February 27, stating that the new battery-powered autonomous double-ended ferries would revolutionize coastal transport, integrating efficiency, innovation, and safety. These zero-emission ferries will operate between Oppedal and Lavik in Norway from September 1, 2026.

Per Fjord1, the ferries will be incorporating autonomous navigation along with a high degree of automation of vessel functions, replacing manual processes.

The implementation of automation functions along with autonomous systems, including auto-docking and auto-crossing, will happen in 2027, while autonomous navigation is expected to be implemented in 2028.

Tersan and Fjord1 collaborated in 2021 when the Turkish shipyard was chosen to build two battery-driven and eco-friendly sister ferries for the Norwegian operator. Before this, Tersan Shipyard delivered to Fjord1 six all-electric ferries.

Fjord1 is also likely to deliver three brand-new electric ferries in the second and third quarters of this year, and the vessels will enter operation on a 15-year deal with Vestland County Council in January next year.
