The Suez Canal Authority revealed that its rescue teams successfully prevented the sinking of the Tanzanian-flagged cargo ship Labatros before it crossed the critical channel.

The vessel, which had 12 crew members on board, was safely retrieved, according to a statement released by the Suez Canal Authority on April 23, 2024.

The incident occurred when the 3,000-ton Labatros, originating in Lebanon and destined for Al-Adabiya Port on the western shore of the Suez Gulf, prepared to join the northern convoy for its transit through the Suez Canal.

During this journey, the Suez Canal Authority’s maritime rescue units swiftly responded to the emergency call, preventing a catastrophic sinking.

Upon arriving at the scene, tugboats, including Port Said and Masahib and the vessel Bahar 10, worked tirelessly to evacuate the crew and stabilise the Labatros, preventing a capsize.

The prompt response of the rescue personnel ensured the safety of all the crew members onboard.

Efforts are underway to analyse the ship’s technical condition and determine the cause of the incident.

In addition, precautions have been taken to limit any potential marine pollution caused by the incident.

The Suez Canal, recognised for its vital significance in worldwide trade, handles over 12% of the global trade volume, making it an essential source of foreign revenue for Egypt.

This successful rescue operation demonstrates the Suez Canal Authority’s significant role in guaranteeing the safe passage of vessels along this strategic maritime corridor.
