With the recent arrival of HaiSea Warrior in British Columbia, Canada’s HaiSea Marine’s fleet of LNG-powered escort and battery-electric harbour tugs has finished their delivery missions from Turkey’s Sanmar Shipyards.

HaiSea Warrior and HaiSea Kermode are two high-performance RAstar 4000-DF LNG dual fuel escort tugs that will lead LNG containers into and out of the soon-to-open LNG Canada plant in British Columbia’s Kitimat.

They will reportedly travel 159 nm from the terminal to the pilot boarding station close to Triple Island, the world’s longest escort route.

HaiSea Brave recently arrived to finish off the set of three ElectRA 2800 battery electric tugs, joining HaiSea Wee’git and HaiSea Wamis – Tug of the Year 2023, as awarded at TugTechnology.

The extraordinary tugs are expected to help LNG carriers with ship berthing/unberthing assistance in the terminal’s vicinity.

The environmental credentials of the new fleet for HaiSea Marine are unmatched worldwide.

The five tugs are the foremost to receive the ENVIRO+ notation of the class society ABS, their highest standard possible.

HaiSea Wamis has emerged as the first tug to receive underwater radiated noise notation (abbreviated as ABS UWN).

Its levels of underwater noise in transit are a mere 1/10th that of an equivalent diesel-mechanical tug.

The airborne emissions of tug types are fractions of those of their conventional counterparts.

Battery electric tugs eject zero CO2 or other greenhouse gases while operating on their enormous battery banks charged from the local clean hydroelectric power grid.

Compliant with IMO Tier III emissions standards (the highest international standard) in any mode of operations, such standards are just a baseline for what the tugs have achieved so far.

Measuring 40 metres in length, delivering 105 tons of bollard pull, and yielding indirect escort steering forces that exceed 175 tons, the RAstar 4000-DF are among the highest performing vessels of their kind in the world and employ the maximum quality escort towing equipment currently available.

The super-tugs are the most formidable escort tugs currently in Canada, capable of aiding in pollution response, emergency towing, and off-ship fire-fighting.

The ElectRA 2800 battery electric tugs are outstanding performers.

The electric propulsion system and huge battery banks deliver tremendous thrust responsiveness and overall handling response.

Their underwater noise signature is extremely low, and they are also incredibly quiet aboard, making them overtly comfortable for the crews.

Similar to their escort tug cousins, they have been awarded the habitability notations by the ABS.

With a fascinating list of world-firsts and performance achievements, the fleet of tugs exemplifies how ecological stewardship is an ideal match with the highest standards of safe performance.
