Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. declared that it is determined to equip its 75,000 DWT class LR1 product tanker, the Nexus Victoria, with “Filtree System,” an onboard CO2 capture mechanism with a SOx scrubber (Note 1) from Value Maritime B.V. (Note 2), a Dutch emission-reducing tech major.

This development marks the first time a Japanese operator is commercially installing a CO2 capture system on a vessel.

The system is anticipated to be installed around the end of the year.

The Filtree System is unique since it boasts a scrubber function that withdraws 99% of sulfur oxides and particulate matter in exhaust gases and a carbon capture and storage mechanism that can separate and recover almost 10% of CO2 from exhaust emissions.

CO2 in exhaust gases generated on the vessel is adsorbed and gathered by reacting with a unique chemical substance.

This chemical will be released ashore. The heat-separated CO2 will be delivered to greenhouses, synthetic fuel firms, and different end users before being used.

The MOL Group has positioned the environmental strategy as an element of the BLUE ACTION 2035 management scheme and set the target of attaining net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 in the MOL Group Environmental Vision 2.2.

The Filtree System singles out and captures CO2 ejected from the vessel, which is anticipated to be a valuable standard of carbon neutralization in the shipping industry.

The system is significant as an initiative as it will contribute to decarbonizing existing vessels that are difficult to convert to next-gen fuels.

VM and MOL will continue striving toward a carbon-neutral community by minimizing GHG emissions from vessels and developing an effective CO2 capture value chain.

From the blue oceans, the MOL Group will aid the sustainable development of society and the preservation of nature, sustain lives, and contribute to building a thriving future by expanding business downstream and upstream in the CCS/CCUS value chain, acquiring new schemes, and expediting the value chain development.
