Officials associated with the Indian government will be permitted to meet the 17 crew members from India currently on an Israel-linked cargo vessel that Iran seized, the foreign ministry of Iran declared on Monday.

The assurance was reached after S Jaishankar, the External Affairs Minister, dialled his Iranian counterpart Amir Abdollahian, expressing his concerns about the crew’s conditions.

In a statement, the Iranian foreign ministry mentioned that Jaishankar requested aid in the matter.

In this context, Dr Amir Abdollahian mentioned that they are following up on relevant details of the seized vessel, and it elaborated that soon, representatives of India’s government will be able to meet the vessel’s crew.

India has also been in touch with Iran to secure the release of the Indians soon after the ship was captured on Saturday.

Jaishankar has also called for avoiding escalations and exerting restraint as tensions between Iran and Israel continue spiralling.

Iran launched the first direct attack on Israel by firing missiles and drones weeks following the Israeli strikes on the consulate based in Syria, which took the lives of seven Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guards.

India has reportedly called for urgent de-escalation and alerted regional embassies to stay in close touch with the Indian community there.

There are grave concerns about the escalation of hostilities between the two countries- Israel and Iran that threaten peace as well as security in the region.

Immediate de-escalation, practising restraint, stepping back from violence, and returning to sheer diplomacy is the need of the hour, the Ministry of External Affairs declared.
