Hitachi Zosen Corporation and NYK Selected For Next-Generation Ship Development Project By NEDO

A Japanese collaboration between Hitachi Zosen Corporation and NYK has been chosen in a new research competition to develop the devices required to eliminate nitric oxide (N2O) emissions in cases where ammonia is heated and burned. As the industry anxiously anticipates the launch of ammonia as an alternative fuel to cope with the challenges related to decarbonization, NYK highlights the vital need to eradicate N2O emissions.

The Japanese New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (abbreviated the NEDO) launched the next round of ongoing efforts for developing green technologies in November last year. Hitachi Zosen, as well as NYK, was chosen as a Next-Generation Ship Development by NEDO for the proposal to create what they are referred to as an N2O Reactor to be engaged on ammonia-fueled vessels as a catalytic reduction system for N2O.

They will acquire funding from NEDO as part of the Green Innovation Fund Projects. Hitachi Zosen boasts a proven track record and know-how in catalytic technology, including the development of a marine vessel selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system for removing nitrogen oxides (NOx) in marine engines.

The firm will also develop the device, catalysts, and control systems for a two-stroke engine. The firms emphasize the importance of regulating N2O emissions. They note that the global warming potential of N2O has been estimated at approximately 300 times that of CO2.

Accordingly, the firms said that reducing N2O emissions is crucial to realize ammonia-fueled vessels that are positively effective in lessening GHG emissions. NYK will be operating with Hitachi Zosen to enhance the equipment layout for vessel installation, and ClassNK will review and contribute its expertise. It will perform the necessary verifications related to the design. The assignment will be launched in 2024 and will run up to 2027.

NYK plans to install the N2O Reactor developed by Hitachi Zosen on an ammonia-fueled vessel that was scheduled to be successfully delivered in November 2026. NYK will also conduct necessary safety and performance verification on demonstration journeys. As a shipping company, NYK has been working to develop opportunities for ammonia as a fuel and for the transport of ammonia. NYK has ordered many ammonia-ready transport vessels and looks to develop its lead in an emerging segment.
