Captain Eezmaira Is Malaysia’s First Woman To Receive The National Seafarer Of The Year Award

Captain Eezmaira Sazzea binti Shaharuzzaman, Eaglestar’s first female Master Mariner made history as the nation’s first female recipient of the prestigious National Seafarer of The Year award during the Day of the Seafarer National Celebration that was held in Terengganu, Malaysia on 25 June 2022. The National Seafarer of the Year is awarded to outstanding Malaysian seafarers who have demonstrated significant passion and commitment in their profession as well as in recognition of their social contribution to the maritime community.

Expressing her appreciation, Captain Eezmaira Sazzea said, “I am truly grateful to be named as the National Seafarer of The Year and this is certainly one of the most important achievements in my career ever since I embarked on my first voyage as a seafarer more than a decade ago. My success to this day would not have been possible without the support and motivation from my family, friends and colleagues. I am grateful to Eaglestar and MISC for continuously paving the way for women to build their careers as maritime professionals and I am incredibly proud to be part of a progressive team that is committed towards fostering diversity, inclusion and talent excellence at sea and shore.”

Captain Eezmaira Sazzea added “I believe that this honour is not only for me, but it also pays tribute to the commitment and passion of women in the maritime industry. I hope this recognition will inspire more women to pursue careers at sea and promote an inclusive maritime future.”

Captain Eezmaira Sazzea was among the first group of Malaysian women selected to pursue professional maritime training at the Malaysian Maritime Academy (Akademi Laut Malaysia, also known as ALAM) and graduated with a Diploma in Nautical Studies in 2010. She has been sailing as an Eaglestar officer for more than 10 years and became the first Malaysian woman to be appointed as a Master Mariner when she took command of MISC’s LNG carrier, Seri Bijaksana in
2021.

During the award presentation ceremony, Captain Eezmaira Sazzea, who is currently on a voyage, was represented by her father, En. Shaharuzzaman bin Abdul Rahman, who received the award
from the Deputy Transport Minister of Malaysia, YB Dato Henry Sum Agong.
