Largest Car Carrier In The World
Operated by shipping company Höegh Autoliners, the Hoegh Aurora is the largest car carrier in the world.
It was constructed in 2024 by China Merchants Heavy Industry, with design contributions from Deltamarin.

Hoegh Aurora is registered under the flag of Norway and has made several voyages, including its first crossing through the Panama Canal in February 2025.
The ship can accommodate up to 9100 car equivalent units (CEU).
It is 199.92 m long, 37.6 m wide and has a 10.8 m draught, with a deadweight tonnage of 25, 563 tonnes.
The vessel has 14 decks, including 5 liftable decks built to accommodate electric vehicles and heavy project cargo.
The largest car carrier has dual-fuel engines that can run on marine gas oil and LNG. It is also ammonia-ready and methanol-ready, allowing conversion to zero-carbon fuels in the future.
The vessel has a green profile and is fitted with 1500 m2 of solar panels on the top deck to decrease reliance on its generators. It can also use shore power for emission-free port operations.
It achieves nearly zero sulphur emissions and significant reductions in particulate matter and nitrogen oxides.
Hoegh Aurora is part of a series of 12 ships being built and set to be delivered by 2028.
The Aurora-Class Ships will reduce carbon emissions per vehicle transported by around 58%, amounting to a reduction of 10,000 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide annually.
Other interesting features of this ship include advanced digital systems for efficient route planning, fuel optimisation and compliance with industry rules and regulations.
The Aurora Class will be the largest and most eco-friendly PCTC ever constructed, aiding Hoegh Autoliners’ decarbonisation efforts and setting new benchmarks for more sustainable sea transportation.
These ships are the first in the PCTC segment to get DNV’s ammonia-ready and methanol-ready notations and will also be the first to operate with ammonia propulsion with their main engine designed by MAN and bridge system supplied by Kongsberg Maritime.
