Commute to work is certainly not the best travelling experience. It’s even worse in cities like Mumbai that are choked with pollution and population. But life might get a notch easier for daily commuters in Mumbai or so claim the Water Transport authorities of Mumbai.
In their latest project named Mumbai Water Transport 2025, the authorities have put forward idea of making Mumbai’s waterways a more integral part of daily commute.
The project is aimed at using the assets of waterways that surround this city to be used as routes for daily travel. And they plan to do so with help of catamaran vessels. These hovercraft-like vessels will be used for the purpose of ferrying people back and forth to various parts of the city on a daily basis. But there is a pleasant twist for all those who wondered what would be so special about this project.
First thing is that these vessels would be double deck styled vessels that would accommodate more people with greater comfort, along with allowing them to enjoy a much better view of the water during their commute.
This means instead of maddening crowd of local trains, pleasant sound of water may become people’s company for travel. Secondly, these vessels would operate on highly eco friendly solar panels which will be placed in the upper portion of the vessel.
A set of 120 solar panels will be used for this purpose. These solar cells would solely power the twin deck structures. Each of these vessels would be a 20 meter long structure with a capacity of about 150 people and more. They would also include facilities for handicapped people including special seating arrangements and separate entrance for maximum convenience.
Adding to the surprises is the VIP element. There is a provision of VIP tickets for those who might want to enjoy the ride alone more than anything else. But on a more commuter-friendly note, this service aims to cover all the main areas of the city including Borivali, Juhu, Chembur, Nariman Point, Bandra, Vashi and Panvel. These and other areas which are closer to the ocean or are maximum traffic zones will become easier to access once this service comes into function.
The project is currently in early stages of draft and design right now. The idea of these catamaran vessels is novel, unique, practical but most importantly- useful. The kind of clogging streets of Mumbai and other cities close to waterways face, such a project would be almost liberating.
The project is aimed to be completed and running by 2025. Until then, best bet for all those daily commuters would be to keep hopes high for a better option in future.
