The US Navy has contracted Electra, an aerospace company specializing in sustainable aviation solutions, through the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) to explore the potential of Electra’s electric short takeoff and landing (eSTOL) aircraft for improving logistics operations in contested environments.

This study aims to identify specific challenged logistics scenarios and examine how Electra’s hybrid-electric eSTOL technology can meet the Navy’s unique operational requirements.

Contested logistics, or transferring military personnel or supplies through difficult or hostile terrain, is important to national security.

Electra’s engagement with the Navy will include defining these situations and performing a conceptual design study to determine the aircraft’s suitability for solving capability shortages in such environments.

Ben Marchionna, Electra’s Director of Technology and Innovation, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to collaborate with the US Navy, stating that Electra’s eSTOL technology has the capabilities required to handle next-generation aviation logistics concerns.

He emphasized the benefits of Electra’s hybrid-electric propulsion and blown fixed-wing design, particularly its potential to provide relevant payloads and ranges for Pacific theatre operations and the flexibility to operate from small, rugged locations and naval vessels.

In addition to traditional logistics applications, Electra envisions their aircraft enabling a variety of innovative functions such as expeditionary power generation, mesh networking, and contributing to Joint All-Domain Command and Control (JADC2) operations, thereby supporting force modernization initiatives in the Navy and Marine Corps.

Electra, widely recognized for its commitment to decarbonizing aviation and boosting air transportation markets, is developing clean, hybrid-electric eSTOL aircraft capable of transporting passengers and freight over longer distances and at lower prices than vertical takeoff alternatives.

The company’s technology has received support from renowned investors, and it has already earned contracts with NASA, the United States Air Force, the United States Army, and, most recently, the US Navy.
