Saudi Arabia Unveils World’s First Offshore Adventure Tourism Destination
Public Investment Fund (abbreviated as PIF) of Saudi Arabia disclosed its master plan for The Rig – an oil-platform-themed offshore adventure destination. The firm has mentioned that the hospitality and adventure experience will span a floor area of more than 300,000 sq. meters and will be located about 40km from the coastline, close to Al Juraid Island and Berri Oil Field based in the Arabian Gulf.
The entertainment destination will be the home to three hotels, spanning 800 rooms, with 11 restaurants. The firm explained that it would also have extreme sports hubs, a marina, an adventure park, and helipads. The Rig seeks to appeal to over 900,000 yearly visitors by 2023, and the project will be executed by Oil Park Development Company (abbreviated the OPDC). It will be completed following the direction of the CEO, Raed N. Bakhrji, who brings over 20 years of experience in the oil and gas industry.

The assignment aligns with the strategy of PIF and the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 goals of contributing to the growth of the tourism sector, indirectly and directly contributing to several employment opportunities, and diversifying the whole economy, the company mentioned. The Rig will store several water activities, including a diving centre, a splash park, an amusement park, an immersive theatre, an e-sports centre, and a multipurpose arena.
Multiple giga-assignments are on the horizon in Saudi Arabia, featuring numerous additions to attractions in Riyadh. Neom, for instance, showcases giga-developments such as the waterfront Norlana lifestyle resort beside Utamo, a surreal art and entertainment destination.
