Hornsea 3 Set To Become World’s Largest Offshore Wind Farm
Ørsted has officially approved the building of Hornsea 3, which will have a colossal capacity of 2.9 GW and become the world’s largest offshore wind farm. The project, expected to be finished by the end of 2027, comes after Ørsted’s successful Hornsea 1 (1.2 GW) and Hornsea 2 (1.3 GW) projects in the same zone.
With strong political support and aggressive development goals, the UK, a crucial market for Ørsted, is acknowledged as one of the world’s largest offshore wind markets. With twelve offshore wind farms already operating in the UK, Ørsted firmly establishes itself in this critical sector.
☑️ 2.9 GW
☑️ 3.3 million homes
☑️ Thousands of jobsEverything is impressive about the offshore wind project Hornsea 3 in the UK, and we’re very excited to announce that we’ve now decided to build this great feat of engineering 🙌

For Hornsea 3, Ørsted obtained a Contract for Difference (CfD) for GBP 37.35 per MWh, adjusted for inflation since 2012. Using the flexibility of the CfD framework, Ørsted intends to distribute some of Hornsea 3’s capacity in the forthcoming UK Allocation Round 6. With Hornsea 3’s robust risk-reward profile and synergies with Hornsea 1 and 2, it is well-positioned to meet Ørsted’s projected lifespan project return range.
Future installation of Hornsea 4 might raise the offshore wind cluster to more than 7 GW and create new synergies.
All the central contracts for Hornsea 3 are in place, including one with Siemens Gamesa for the state-of-the-art SG 14-236 DD offshore wind turbines.
With thousands employed in developing low-cost green energy for over 3.3 million homes and significant offshore wind supply chain investments, Hornsea 3 will provide major advantages to the UK. The project’s significance in the worldwide offshore wind market and its contribution to the UK’s energy transition were emphasised by Mads Nipper, Group President and CEO of Ørsted.
Head of Ørsted UK & Ireland Duncan Clark emphasised Hornsea 3’s contribution to meeting UK government climate and renewable energy targets, improving energy independence, and generating jobs locally.
