Britain’s Polar Research Vessel Unexpectedly Encounters World’s Largest Iceberg
The world’s largest iceberg, A23a, was unexpectedly encountered by Britain’s polar research vessel, the RRS Sir David Attenborough, during its first scientific mission to Antarctica.
The enormous iceberg, twice the size of Greater London and three times the size of New York City had been drifting aimlessly in the Weddell Sea for over thirty years when wind and currents finally forced it into the Southern Ocean. Near the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula, the research ship encountered A23a with the right team aboard.

It’s 3,900km2 – so a bit bigger than Cornwall.

The chief scientist, Andrew Meijers, and others on board took advantage of the drifting iceberg to gather seawater samples. The team saw the encounter as “incredibly lucky” since it allowed them to learn more about the effects of A23a and other similar icebergs on the surrounding ocean.
Scientist Laura Taylor of the ship pointed out that massive icebergs such as A23a can nourish and support healthy ecosystems in less productive regions.
As a component of a larger project worth £9 million ($11.3 million), the scientific mission looks into how Antarctic ecosystems and sea ice affect global ocean cycles of nutrients and carbon.
The discoveries made by the RRS Sir David Attenborough will improve our knowledge of how the Southern Ocean’s varied organisms are impacted by climate change.
The 10-day expedition’s strict schedule was not disturbed by the research vessel’s prompt encounter with A23a, which provided a rare chance to examine the massive iceberg’s effects on the marine ecosystem.
