Chao was the youngest of six daughters of James Chao, who formed Foremost Group in 1964 with her late mother, Ruth Mulan Chu Chao. Her family was well-established in the shipping industry, and Chao was born into this family in 1974. Her tenure with the company started in 1996 when she moved from Smith Barney’s, which is now a part of Morgan Stanley’s mergers and acquisitions department.
