A cargo ship Captain and Second Mate have been arrested after colliiding with a fishing boat and continuing on their way.

The incident happened on May 16, 2024, when the cargo ship was sailing off the southern coast of Iceland.

Fortunately, the fishermen did not suffer any injuries, but their boat turned upside down in the chilly waters. The Coat Guard tracked the cargo ship into Vestmannaeyjar Port.

Per the Coast Guard, it was 0300 local times when a fishing vessel touched an object. The operator thought it might be a container and then saw it was actually his friend’s boat.

The two of them had left for fishing in their respective boats, and one friend was some miles away from his other friend, who ultimately saved his life.

After an emergency call, the Coast Guard sent a helicopter. However, the man emerged from under the boat in a waterlogged survival suit. The man’s friend retrieved him from the water as the rescue team was on their way.

The Survivor spoke of his ordeal and mentioned he was hit by a cargo ship. Though uninjured, he was cold and wet and could have died if help did not arrive in time.

The Coast Guard found the ship Longdawm, which was sailing from Rotterdam. Police mentioned that both vessels showed signs of collision, which is why the fishing boat capsized. Scrapes can be seen on the bulb of the vessel’s bow.

The Police arrested the Captain, Chief Officer, First Mate and Second Mate for investigation purposes. The chief officer and first mate were released.

The court ordered the captain and Second Mate to remain in detention for four weeks while the investigation continues.
