Multi-functional Floating Offshore Windfarm Support Vessel Receives ClassNK AiP

The innovative design of a multifunctional floating offshore windfarm support vessel (MFSV) developed by “K” Line Wind Service, in cooperation with Japan Marine United Corporation and Nihon Shipyard Co., Ltd., has received approval in principle (AiP) from ClassNK. This AiP represents a significant advancement in the infrastructure for renewable energy, especially in Japan, where the construction of offshore floating wind turbines offers a chance for the country to become carbon neutral by 2050.

The MFSV is designed to carry out extensive mooring operations, including the mooring system’s transportation, deployment, and anchor positioning, which are necessary to install floating offshore wind turbines. The vessel offers a multifunctional approach, addressing requirements for survey, transportation, building, operation, and maintenance throughout the lifecycle of offshore wind projects through brilliant collaborations and rigorous design.

Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) has supported the development of this innovative vessel design as part of the Green Innovation Fund Project. The fact that typical bottom-fixed offshore wind turbines can only be installed in shallow sea locations highlights the critical role that floating offshore wind plays in Japan’s renewable energy environment.

“K” Line Wind Service has worked closely with Japan Marine United and Nihon Shipyard to optimise mooring techniques and vessel designs to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of installing floating offshore wind turbines. An important step forward in this quest has been reached with the successful completion of the MFSV design concept and the consequent AiP issue by ClassNK.

The MFSV’s versatile design goes beyond its basic mooring work tasks to provide solutions for various stages of offshore wind projects. It demonstrates a dedication to creativity and adaptability in addressing industry difficulties. The endeavour to get patent protection highlights this concept’s distinctiveness and possible influence on vessel design.

“K” Line Wind Service is unwavering in helping society achieve its low-carbon and decarbonisation objectives. ClassNK’s principle approval marks not only the project’s technical viability but also a significant step toward achieving the goal of offshore wind power generating cost reduction and mass production. This accomplishment supports the development of renewable energy solutions for a sustainable future, which aligns with the larger goals of the Green Innovation Fund Project.
