Maersk Tankers Leads The Way With 10 Very Large Ammonia Carriers Order

The world’s largest tanker company, Maersk Tankers, has announced plans to lead the way in the seaborne transportation of clean ammonia.

Maersk Tankers has received an order from Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries for up to 10 very large ammonia carriers, drawing on its nearly century-long experience operating tanker and gas vessels. Mitsui & Co., Ltd. will join as a co-investor for the first four vessels.

At 93,000 cubic meters, these vessels rank among the largest in use. They are expected to be crucial in supplying the clean ammonia transportation industry’s growing need for safe, secure, and energy-efficient solutions.

The action is being taken as clean ammonia, and clean hydrogen become increasingly essential commodities in the global transition. With so many clean ammonia assignments relying on maritime transportation, Maersk Tankers wants to be a vital resource for producers and consumers of clean energy worldwide.

Tina Revsbech, Maersk Tankers CEO, underlined the necessity of concrete actions in the tanker sector to spearhead the transition. An additional six vessels are included in the contract as options, and those are expected to start service in late 2026.

Maersk Tankers is collaborating with the Engine Machine Division of Hyundai Heavy Industries and MAN Energy Solutions to equip the vessels with engines that run cleanly on ammonia.

However, installing engines that can handle ammonia depends on customer and regulatory support.
Co-investor Mitsui expressed support for the project with enthusiasm.

Mitsui & Co., General Manager of the Marine Solutions Business Division, Kensuke Kubota, emphasised the company’s dedication to utilising knowledge and experience from the energy, chemicals, and shipping industries to expedite ammonia transportation and position it as a viable alternative for next-generation energy sources.

Specialising in voyage management services for a growing fleet of about thirty very large gas carriers (VLGCs), Maersk Tankers will rejoin the gas sector in 2023, building on its legacy. To meet the growing demand for transportation capacity in the clean ammonia market, the company now seeks to work in conjunction with its broad network of producers and users of pure ammonia.

The American Bureau of Shipping will classify the vessels, guaranteeing compliance with strict operational and safety guidelines.
