The Sunflower Kurenai, owned and operated by MOL and its group firm MOL Sunflower, Ltd., is the first LNG-fueled ferry in Japan. It was announced today by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL; President and CEO: Takeshi Hashimoto) that it has won the Grand Prize, the highest honour, in the Nikkei Excellent Products and Services Awards of 2023.
The Nikkei Excellent Products and Services Awards, marking the 42nd anniversary in 2024, are presented yearly to outstanding new products and services. The Products and services introduced in 2023 and published in the media of Nikkei Inc. are comprehensively judged in these six categories: cost-effectiveness, technological development, growth, performance contribution, uniqueness, and impact on industry and society.
In 2023, 16 of the most appropriate products and services (five dedicated to production goods, five to consumer goods, and six toward services) were selected from the 228 candidates as outstanding new products and services.
The Sunflower Kurenai has been highly regarded, particularly for its uniqueness and social impact, as it was the first-ever LNG-fueled ferry to start providing service in Japan.
