Japan Welcomes First LNG-Fueled Capesize Bulk Carrier

A capesize, LNG-fueled bulk carrier, ordered by the NYK, will be deployed for transporting coal and iron ore to Japan from Australia under a consecutive long-term voyage charter deal with JFE Steel Corporation (abbreviated JFE) has been delivered.

The naming ceremony was conducted on Jan 30 at the Tsu Shipyard in the Mie Prefecture of Japan Marine United Corporation. The vessel is the first-ever Capesize LNG-run bulk carrier to be constructed at a Japanese shipyard, per NYK research.

The ship was given the name “SG Ocean” to symbolize both the “SG” of the “Sail GREEN” brand of NYK, which highlights decreasing greenhouse gas emissions via the transportation of goods and supporting environmentally conscious customer supply chains, and the idea of a magnificent vessel cruising the open sea while safeguarding the environment.

To fulfil NYK Group’s aim of cutting GHG emissions by about 45% from levels observed in fiscal 2021 by fiscal 2030, NYK continues to expand its fleet of LNG-fueled vessels as it takes on the challenge of decarbonizing a complete supply chain.

Compared to current traditional heavy-oil-fueled boats, the LNG-fueled vessel will generate roughly 75% less nitrogen oxide (NOx), no sulfur oxide (SOx), and 25% less carbon dioxide (CO2).

Besides, the vessel will comply with the NOx emission regulations of the IMO (Tier III). It uses the most recent 7X62DF-2.1 iCER slow-speed dual-fuel diesel engine from WinGD, which is said to reduce methane emissions by halving the use of LNG fuel.
