Indian Navy Set To Boost Naval Prowess With Approval Of Rs 19,000 Crore Brahmos Deal

In a significant move, the Cabinet Committee on Security has approved the procurement of 200+ BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles and associated equipment for the Indian Navy at about Rs 19,000 crore. The missiles will be deployed on several warships to boost the Navy’s combat capabilities. It has been understood that the proposal that the CCS approved encompasses the acquisition of a mix of BrahMos missiles that boast a range of about 290 km and the most recent extended-range variant of the weapon with a range of about 450 km.

BrahMos Aerospace Pvt Ltd, an India and Russian joint venture, reportedly produces supersonic cruise missiles, which can quickly be launched from submarines, vessels, land, or aircraft platforms. BrahMos missile flies at a recorded speed of about 2.8 Mach, or nearly three times that of the speed of sound. The formal deals for acquiring these missiles will likely be sealed within the coming months.

India is exporting its BrahMos missiles. In Jan 2022, India reportedly sealed a $375 million deal with the Philippines to offer three missile batteries. The supplies of missiles to Southeast Asian nations are prepared to commence next month. Some other countries, like Argentina, have shown interest in procuring the Indian BrahMos missiles. The approval of the Rs.19,000 crore procurement assignment comes through amid the renewed focus on overall maritime safety and security in the wake of China’s evolving forays into the Indian Ocean region.

The IAF has integrated the Indian BrahMos supersonic cruise missile on Sukhoi fighter jets. On the other hand, India has been focused on boosting its combat capabilities over the past few years. In the last week, India’s Defence Acquisition Council (abbreviated the DAC) approved acquisition assignments worth nearly Rs 84,560 crore, which included procuring mid-air refuellers, air defence radars, heavy-weight torpedoes, as well as new-gen anti-tank mines.

The DAC accorded the initial approval for procuring medium-range maritime reconnaissance and multi-mission aircraft to strengthen the surveillance abilities of India’s Navy and that of the Indian Coast Guard.
