Indian Navy On High Alert Amidst Security Concerns In Arabian Sea And Gulf Of Aden

On Wednesday, the Indian Navy said that its vessels and aircraft stay mission deployed to maintain more enhanced surveillance and take on maritime security operations. Over the last week, India’s Naval Task Groups deployed in the zone have examined many fishing vessels and boarded the ship of interest, it mentioned.

The Navy enhanced maritime surveillance efforts in light of recent incidents of attacks on commercial vessels, including that of the drone attack on MV Chem Pluto around 220 nm to the southwest of Porbandar in the last month. The Indian Navy continues monitoring maritime security scenarios in the North/Central Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Aden, the Navy mentioned in a statement. It said that India’s naval maritime patrol aircraft and its remotely piloted aircraft are taking on persistent surveillance over the region.

Indian Navy is coordinating with the Coast Guard to maintain enhanced surveillance within the country’s exclusive economic zone. The Indian Navy said it is committed to protecting the safety of seafarers and merchant shipping in the area and is actively monitoring the general situation in collaboration with national maritime agencies.

A drone attack off the west coast of India on December 23 targeted the Liberian-flagged ship MV Chem Pluto, which had 21 Indian crew members on board. The attack raised security concerns in New Delhi simultaneously when the Iran-backed Houthi terrorists were also attacking other commercial vessels sailing in the Red Sea.

In addition to MV Chem Pluto, yet another commercial oil tanker headed towards India was targeted by what appeared to be a drone strike in the Southern Red Sea the same day. The ship’s crew consisted of twenty-five Indians. In a different event, the MV Ruen, flying the Malta flag, was hijacked on December 14 2023.
