Indian Navy Gears Up For Largest Multinational Exercise, MILAN 2024

The Eastern Naval Command, based in Visakhapatnam, is in charge of the Indian Navy’s largest-ever multilateral exercise, Milan, which will take place in the Bay of Bengal starting on February 19.

Fifty friendly nations will participate in the 12th edition of Exercise Milan, which will conclude on February 27.

More than 20 vessels from friendly foreign nations would participate in the drill, according to Indian Navy sources. Our navy will use the same number of ships — including aircraft carriers — and other platforms.

It is regarded as a major increase in the Indian Navy’s involvement and ability to support nations in the Indian Ocean region as the Preferred Security Partner and first responder. The eight-day exercise would have two stages: a harbour and a sea phase.

A range of advanced tactical training, manoeuvring drills, air defence exercises, submarine familiarization, multinational replenishment at sea, gunnery exercises, communications drills, and combined war-fighting scenarios will be the vessels’ main priorities throughout the sea phase.

Per an official, the global exercise Milan-2024’s final planning meeting was conducted in Visakhapatnam using a hybrid format that included in-person and video conference attendance. The participating navies attended the conference headed by the Chief Staff Officer (Operations) of Eastern Naval Command.

Forty fleets, including those from the US, Japan, the UK, Australia, France, Bangladesh, South Korea, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Malaysia, participated in the previous iteration of the biennial Milan exercise.

The first-ever Exercise Milan was conducted in 1995 with four navies, and since then, it has been held every two years. The 2020 edition was cancelled alluded to the COVID-19 pandemic worldwide.
