Indian Maritime Trade Unaffected By Red Sea Issues, Affirms Shipping Secretary

T K Ramachandran, the secretary of Ports, Shipping and Waterways on Wednesday stated that the issues in the Red Sea are not going to have any impact on Indian maritime trade with the rest of the globe.

The ongoing situation surrounding the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait, a critical shipping channel that connects the Red and the Mediterranean Seas to the Indian Ocean, has escalated owing to the most recent attacks launched by Yemen-based Houthis.

Asked will the Red Sea developments have impacts on the Indian maritime trade, he stated, “No impact”. The strait, important for 30% of worldwide container traffic, has witnessed increased tensions with different incidents in 2023, including attacks as well as military manoeuvres by both global and regional powers.

The Bab-el-Mandeb Strait, popular in Arabic as the “Gate of Tears”, is a critical trade channel that links the Mediterranean Sea to the Indian Ocean via the Suez Canal and the Red Sea. It disconnects the Arabian Peninsula from Africa.
