German Shipowner Invests In Norsepower Rotor Sail Installation On Cement Carrier

Baltrader Capital, based in Hamburg, has contracted with Norsepower, a global leader in auxiliary wind propulsion systems, to deliver a Norsepower Rotor Sail™. The contract is for the delivery of one 24m x 4m Norsepower Rotor Sail™ in summer 2024. The sail will be installed on the newest cement carrier in the Baltrader fleet, M/V CEMCOMMANDER, which is scheduled to be delivered from Jiangsu Zhenjiang Shipyard (Group) Co. Ltd. The vessel’s ecological ship design was handled by SDC Ship Design & Consultants GmbH, which is also based in Hamburg.

The Norsepower Rotor Sail™ is a modified version of the Flettner Rotor. It uses the ship’s electric power to actively rotate the cylinder-shaped rotor on the deck, providing strong thrust. According to Norsepower, this technology corresponds with funding targets by conserving fuel and reducing emissions by up to 14%. Such wind-assisted propulsion systems directly contribute to climate protection efforts, accelerating the transition to carbon-neutral shipping.

M/V CEMCOMMANDER, under the European flag, will be commercially operated by Baltrader Schifffahrtsgesellschaft mbH & Co. KG. The vessel’s technical management will be managed by BRISE Bereederungs GmbH & Co. KG, which serves as the technical manager for the whole Baltrader fleet. Bureau Veritas will classify the wind propulsion system on M/V CEMCOMMANDER as WPS2.

The Norsepower Rotor Sail™ installation is financed by the German Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport’s “Sustainable Modernization of Coastal Vessels” (NaMKü) financial directive. This regulation intends to improve the energy efficiency of coastal vessels in line with broader sustainability objectives.

Kai-Erik Clemmesen, Managing Director of Baltrader / BRISE, expressed enthusiasm for the installation, stating that the technology will improve the fuel efficiency and environmental friendliness of their most recent new building. Norsepower’s CEO, Tuomas Riski, welcomed Baltrader as a new customer, ensuring that the finance directive’s performance standards will be met using data from eight previous ships.

Norsepower’s Chief Customer Operations Officer, Jukka Kuuskoski, expressed enthusiasm for assisting Baltrader’s decarbonization efforts with their revolutionary Norsepower Rotor Sail™ installation on M/V CEMCOMMANDER. Baltrader’s fleet comprises contemporary, pneumatically self-discharging cement vessels, with the company currently operating twelve specialized cement carriers ranging from 3000 to 6700 t (DWCC).

Tuomas Riski, CEO of Norsepower, recently discussed the need for challenging vessel design in navigating future regulatory issues, highlighting the common misconception that wind propulsion technologies are antiquated relics. Norsepower has expanded its business portfolio with a deal reached with French shipowner Louis Dreyfus Armateurs SAS (LDA) to install rotor sails on a new low-emission RoRo fleet chartered to Airbus.
