The Marshall Islands-flagged crude oil tanker Dubai Angel was moored at the Westridge Marine Terminal in Vancouver, gearing up to load the first crude oil cargo from the newly expanded Trans Mountain pipeline (abbreviated as TMX) on May 20, 2024.

The information came through the tracking data.

Chartered by Canadian oil major Suncor Energy, the vessel was anticipated to load approximately 550,000 barrels of Access Western Blend for delivery to China.

Trans Mountain expects to load the first vessel with oil from the expanded pipeline in the month.

The TMX, which will ship 590,000 barrels of oil per day (bpd) to the Pacific coast of Canada from Alberta, started its commercial operations this month following several years of regulatory delays and construction setbacks.

Traders and shippers constantly monitor pipeline flows and loadings via the Westridge Marine Terminal as the expansion increases Canadian producers’ access to the US West Coast and Asian markets.

Tightening the supply of heavy crude oil has made Canadian oil more appealing to prospective buyers worldwide.

Traders and shipping experts have stated that logistical restrictions at the Port of Vancouver may limit the quantity of items being transported.

The Port of Vancouver and Suncor didn’t respond to requests for comments right away.

Suncor mentioned this month that it had been leasing Aframax vessels in the Pacific and selling to customers directly, seeking to improve profits from the oil transported on TMX.
