Finnlines Receives Next Generation Hybrid Superstar Freight-Passenger Vessel

Finnish shipping firm Finnlines has taken the delivery of Finncanopus, the second of its two Superstar-series freight-passenger (ro-pax) vessels. The China Merchants Jinling Shipyard, based in Weihai, China, hosted the delivery ceremony.

It is anticipated that the shipyard’s return journey will take six to seven weeks. Before sailing into the Baltic Sea, Finncanopus will make multiple port calls while being completely loaded with cargo.

In February 2024, the 1 A Super ice-class ship flying the flag of Finland will cross the Finnlines boundary between Finland and Sweden. The €500 million green newbuilding initiative of Finnlines, which is fully finished, includes the new ro-pax vessels.

The initiative included three hybrid ro-ro vessels and two hybrid ro-pax boats that were outfitted with environmentally friendly features like battery packs, air lubricating systems, as well as onshore power capabilities.

Delivered to Finnlines in July, the first Superstar ro-pax ship, Finnsirius, joined the Naantali–Långnäs–Kapellskär channel in September 2023. On the journey, Finncanopus will set off from Kapellskär early in the morning and Naantali in the evening, following Finnsirius’ lead.

The largest Ro-Pax ships in Finnlines’ fleet are the two sister ships. Both are authorized to carry 1,100 people and have 5,200 lane meters for cargo.
