CMA CGM Ship Targeted By Houthis In Latest Red Sea Incident

In an attempt to draw attention to themselves and the danger that they pose to a vital commerce route, Houthi militants reported that they had targeted another merchant vessel in the Red Sea. In a speech that was shown on television, a representative for the Houthis’ military forces claimed that the CMA CGM Tage was targeted after being warned not to go. In response, CMA CGM SA stated that the vessel wasn’t subject to any incident and was travelling toward Alexandria, located at the northern terminus of Egypt’s Suez Canal, through the Red Sea.

After the attacks, many shipping companies decided to sail their vessels thousands of miles around Africa rather than across the Red Sea. The Houthis claim that they’re targeting any ships that are connected to Israel, even though these supposed ties seem more and more spurious.

Around the time the CMA CGM Tage would have been sailing through, a vessel came under attack, according to the UK Maritime Trade Operations, a British naval detachment. The carrier’s name was omitted. Reports of as many as three explosions at a distance of one to five nm from a merchant vessel were mentioned.

The commercial maritime sector handles approximately 12% of world trade, which the US and its closest allies attempt to control. However, this week, after a second of its vessels were attacked, A.P. Moeller-Maersk A/S declared that it would stay out of the area until additional notice was given.

On X, the US Central Command informed that two anti-ship ballistic missiles had been fired into the Southern Hejaz by Houthis supported by Iran from Houthi-controlled regions in Yemen. It further stated that although none of the regional commercial vessels reported any damages, several reported the effect of the ASBMs in the nearby water. The US Central Command says that since November 19, there have been 24 attacks against commerce vessels in the southern Red Sea.
