Chevron has chartered its first hybrid electric bunker tanker in Singapore, marking a revolutionary step forward in the maritime industry. The Marine Dynamo ship significantly advances the company’s efforts to cut emissions and explore cutting-edge technologies.

One of the biggest names in the energy sector, Chevron, has chartered the hybrid electric bunker tanker Marine Dynamo to service the region’s maritime customers.

The vessel, operated by V-Bunkers, arrived at Singaporean facilities during the summer of last year, marking a turning point in the maritime industry’s adoption of green technologies.

The launch of the hybrid electric bunker tanker is expected to impact environmental sustainability and operating expenses significantly.

The Marine Dynamo is a pioneer in pursuing lower carbon emissions and greater financial returns. Its fuel consumption is estimated to decrease by 20% compared to traditional tankers.

Nayab Karimi, Chevron’s trading manager for fuels in Asia Pacific, emphasises the importance of this development and highlights how it helps the corporation achieve its twin profitability and sustainability goals.

The Marine Dynamo is similar to a hybrid electric vehicle in that it has a conventional fuel engine and an electric power source. The ship uses electricity to regain power at times of high use, maximising fuel economy.

Unlike traditional bunker tankers, which usually have three auxiliary engines, the Marine Dynamo has two auxiliary engines and an electric power distribution system.

However, present technological restrictions limit the vessel from running entirely on electricity. Varun Kohli, Chevron’s term charterer in Asia Pacific, addressed the obstacles and highlighted that future developments in battery technology could permit full-electric operations.

The Marine Dynamo’s capabilities go beyond fuel savings. The vessel is set to capitalise on Singapore’s electrification plans for onshore charging infrastructure.

This strategic alignment demonstrates Chevron’s commitment to supporting technical innovation and promoting a more sustainable future for its global operations.

Jennifer Chao, Chevron’s commercial marine manager in Asia Pacific, highlights the vessel’s function as a proof of concept and demonstration for hybrid electric technology.

Chevron intends to evaluate the broader application of such technologies throughout its global operations by gathering data and testing capabilities.
