The United States Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) continues investigating the devastating collapse of the Key Bridge in Baltimore, focusing on the electrical system of the Dali cargo ship involved in the event.

Jennifer Homendy, the chair of the NTSB, briefed Congress on the ongoing activities, including essential developments and areas of concentration.

Homendy revealed during a Senate session that important cargo ship employees had been questioned as part of the probe.

These interviews included the pilots, the second officer on duty at the time of the collision, and additional crew members, in addition to U.S. Coast Guard officers.

The assessment thoroughly evaluates Dali’s power system, including its electrical components and circuit breakers.

Hyundai, the firm that developed the ship’s braking and power systems, has actively offered the investigating team advice and support.

Homendy highlighted how the NTSB and Hyundai worked together to examine the ship’s technologies.

In addition, the NTSB thoroughly examines the original bridge design and determines whether it still complies with contemporary regulations.

Homendy highlighted how crucial it is to reevaluate pier safety precautions in regard to evolving traffic and shipping patterns.

The organization is dedicated to thoroughly analyzing the conditions that led to the collapse to prevent such tragedies in the future.

Despite the investigation’s progress, Homendy emphasized the need for more funding to strengthen the NTSB’s investigative skills.

She argued that four more marine investigators should be hired to support the agency’s safety objective adequately.

Governor Wes Moore gave a status report on the rescue and salvage operations, outlining developments in the extraction of containers from the Dali.

Nonetheless, the operation’s complexity and dangers highlight the difficulties responders face.

As the investigation progresses, the NTSB expects to provide a preliminary report on the collapse by the first week of May.

The organization remains committed to identifying the incident’s leading causes and implementing safety standards improvement measures.

According to a recent U.S. Census Bureau assessment, the collapse has significantly impacted the greater Baltimore area, affecting nearly one million people.

The far-reaching consequences serve as a clear reminder of how urgent it is to fix infrastructure vulnerabilities and prioritize safety precautions.
