Capsized Barge Linked To Tobago Oil Spill Possibly Obtained Fuel From Venezuela

A barge that capsized this year in February and caused a massive oil spill close to Tobago that also affected neighbouring Caribbean islands may have collected the fuel from Venezuela, Trinidad and Stuart Young, Tobago’s energy minister, reported on Monday.

The vessels were sailing for Guyana.

The minister spoke about a barge getting towed by a tugboat while unravelling the outcomes of his government’s examination of the incident.

The spill, earlier determined by the authorities of Trinidad to be fuel oil, came from a capsized vessel first noticed by the Coast Guard on 7 February.

Thousands of fuel barrels leaked as the authorities strived to plug the leak safely.

The fuel blackened the coastline of Tobago and hit the coast of Bonaire.
