Canadian Shipyard Worker Dies In A Tragic Workplace Incident
A 43-year-old man working at Canada’s Halifax Shipyard lost his life after being struck by a piece of equipment, according to the Halifax Regional Police. The tragic incident occurred on the 19th of February (Monday) at Canada’s Halifax Shipyard run by Irving Shipbuilding.
The authorities were notified of the incident shortly before noon, triggering an instant response from law enforcement and emergency personnel. Following the incident, Irving Shipbuilding immediately cancelled the afternoon and night shifts for the day. Additionally, the corporation declared that it would provide onsite and virtual counselling services to its staff.
The Department of Labour issued a stop-work order following established procedures for such instances. The accident-related equipment will be thoroughly mechanically inspected as part of the investigation.
Irving Shipbuilding expressed its grief by sharing that a workplace accident had occurred at the Shipyard, resulting in the loss of one of their teammates, urging privacy for those affected by the tragic incident.
Over the last decade, Irving Shipbuilding has made major investments in the Halifax Shipyard, a vital base for shipbuilding operations. The site is designed for large-scale indoor shipbuilding projects, with a building hall over 1,300 feet long and more than 150 feet tall.
Irving Shipbuilding has responded to the event by assuring full cooperation with the Department of Labour’s continuing inquiry. The company stressed its commitment to learning from the tragedy and avoiding similar occurrences in the future.
The shipyard labour organization, Unifor, has also conveyed condolences. The union pledged to assist professional investigators and health and safety specialists, ensuring that necessary measures are carried out following a workplace injury or death.
As investigations continue, the circumstances surrounding the incident, particularly the identity of the dead, remain unresolved. However, the Department of Labour and the Halifax Police Department actively participated in the investigation, focusing on concern for the affected family while gathering critical information to determine the cause of the accident.
