French Navy Seizes Drugs Worth Over $142 Million In Arabian Sea
The French Navy has seized illegal drugs valued at more than USD 142 million during a series of maritime security operations in the Arabian Sea, while operating in support of the Saudi-led Combined Task Force (CTF) 150, under the Combined Maritime Forces (CMF).
According to CMF, two French Navy frigates carried out the operations over several weeks and intercepted multiple suspicious dhows.
These vessels drew attention because they had no external identification markings and were not transmitting signals on the Automatic Identification System (AIS), which is required under international rules for vessels above certain size and weight limits.
After receiving permission from CTF 150, French naval boarding teams conducted flag-verification boardings on the dhows.
During nine separate boardings, the crews discovered large quantities of crystal methamphetamine (ICE) and hash. In total, more than 16 tonnes of drugs were seized.
CMF confirmed that the seized substances were tested, identified as illegal drugs, and later disposed of.
Based on pricing estimates from the Regional Narcotics Interagency Fusion Cell (RNIFC), the combined regional wholesale value of the drugs was assessed at more than USD 142 million.
CTF 150 leadership stated that the steady presence of multinational naval forces has played a key role in disrupting drug smuggling at sea.
The task force noted that recent months have seen one of the most successful periods of interdictions in CMF’s history, crediting this to strong cooperation among the participating navies.
The task force also highlighted a recent operation by Pakistan Navy warships PNS Yamook and PNS Tabuk, which intercepted over four tonnes of crystal methamphetamine and 50 kilograms of cocaine. That seizure was estimated to have a combined regional wholesale value of more than USD 295 million.
CTF 150 is one of five task forces under Combined Maritime Forces, the world’s largest international naval partnership. Its mission is to stop non-state actors from moving weapons, drugs and other illegal goods across the Indian Ocean, Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Oman.
Combined Maritime Forces includes 47 nations and operates across around 3.2 million square miles of sea, covering some of the world’s busiest and most important shipping routes.
