World’s Most Energy-Efficient Vessel Launched With Wärtsilä Solutions
Technology group Wärtsilä has provided a broad scope of solutions for ‘MSC Euribia’ which completed its net-zero GHG emission maiden voyage on June 8 in Copenhagen, Denmark, where also the official naming ceremony took place. The ‘MSC Euribia’ is MSC Cruises’ most energy-efficient vessel yet. It is equipped with some of the latest and most advanced technologies and solutions to ensure the highest levels of efficiency and sustainability.
The LNG-fuelled ship operates with two 16-cylinder and two 12-cylinder Wärtsilä 46DF dual-fuel engines fitted with nitrogen oxide reduction (NOR) units, two Wärtsilä LNGPac fuel storage and supply systems and four Wärtsilä thrusters. The combination of LNG fuel, which is the cleanest burning fossil fuel, and the highly efficient Wärtsilä 46DF engines allows this vessel to be a benchmark in the reduction of emissions. The orders for Wärtsilä equipment were placed in 2018-2019.
Wärtsilä has also supplied its NACOS Platinum integrated navigation system which will help the vessel to safely navigate the most efficient routes possible. What’s more, it has also supplied the ship’s freshwater production system. The unique and highly efficient water supply equipment can save up to one ton of fuel per day, in comparison with conventional systems.
“The coming into service of MSC Euribia marks another significant step on the Cruise Division’s decarbonisation journey as she just completed the first ever net zero journey for a cruise ship. MSC Euribia exemplifies our commitment to next generation environmental technologies that will ultimately enable decarbonised operations. We appreciate the value of the Wärtsilä solutions, which are crucial to the ship’s efficient and sustainable performance,” commented Michele Francioni, SVP Process Improvement for MSC Cruises.
“The cruise industry is leading the way to decarbonising shipping operations, and the ‘MSC Euribia’ is a prime example of this. We are fully supportive of this trend, and are working hard to deliver the environmentally sustainable technologies that will accelerate the transition to Carbon Neutral operations,” said Maikel Arts, General Manager of Technical Sales, Cruise – Marine Projects Business Support, Wärtsilä.
The ‘MSC Euribia’ is the second ship in the MSC Cruises’ fleet to be powered by LNG fuel. This achieves a substantial reduction in emissions. It becomes the 22nd cruise ship in the company’s fleet.
