Vale Begins Its First Biofuel Voyage On An Oldendorff Bulk Vessel, Hinrich Oldendorff

In collaboration with Oldendorff Carriers, Vale is starting its maiden biofuel journey aboard a bulk carrier. The trial takes place on an Oldendorff tanker sailing from Brazil to Asia with a cargo of iron ore.

On October 16, the Hinrich Oldendorff (with a 209,113 deadweight, constructed in 2016) loaded the biofuel in Singapore for the ballast journey to Brazil. The vessel then loaded Vale’s iron ore at Guaiba Island Terminal on November 28 and will use the combined biofuel on the laden leg to Asia from Brazil.

The B24 biofuel aboard is a blend of around 24% discarded vegetable cooking oil (286 metric tons), while the rest is fuel oil. The given product complies with the EU Renewable Energy Directive (EU RED) and has been certified by the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (abbreviated ISCC).

The anticipated well-to-wake CO2 equivalent savings are around 18%/784 metric tons of CO2 equivalent and will make a contribution to Vale’s Scope 3 emission reduction.

The usage of biofuel on the laden journey constitutes a component of the Ecoshipping program, a research and development project by the Vale shipping industry to minimize shipping greenhouse gas emissions in line with IMO aspirations.

In addition to piloting new energy-saving technologies, the initiative evaluates and develops solutions for alternative fuels in shipping.

Oldendorff Carriers have previously conducted biofuel testing on smaller vessels. For the relatively shorter voyages, this will be the company’s first full voyage on a Newcastlemax using biofuel.

We are grateful to have excellent shipping partners devoted to supporting and making our projects a reality. Genuine collaborations and partnerships will be critical to success, according to Michelle Gonzalez, Vale’s GM of Chartering, Long-Term Contracts, and Operations.
