U.S Sends 1.1 million Rounds Of Seized Iranian Ammunition To Ukraine

The United States sent approximately 1.1 million bullets it confiscated from Iran in 2022 to Ukraine, per the U.S. military.

The U.S. Central Command mentioned that this ammunition was seized from a vessel accused of carrying weapons from Iran to the Houthi rebel group in Yemen.

“The U.S. government transferred approximately 1.1 million 7.62mm rounds to the Ukrainian armed forces” on Monday, the military’s Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement, saying it “obtained ownership of these munitions on July 20, 2023, through the Department of Justice’s civil forfeiture claims”.

This development came amidst tensions between Tehran and Washington, with the main points of disagreement being Iran supporting Russia in its occupation of Ukraine and the Houthis in Yemen.

However, per experts, this shipment won’t make a massive difference in Kyiv’s attempts to attack Russia. Ukraine is emphasising using long-range weapons and air defence to expel Russian forces.

U.S. Military aid has been crucial till now; however, conservative members of the U.S. Republican Party pledge to clamp down on funds. Many are questioning the durability of Western support in the war against Russia.

In Slovakia, a presidential candidate promised not to assist Ukraine if voted to power and won the election recently.

The Pentagon said that previous assistance enables the U.S. to support Ukraine only a little longer; however, congressional approval for new spending and aid will be essential to continue doing that in the long term.

Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, and from then onwards, the U.S. has given over $43 billion in military assistance, making over half of all international aid. However, with the current trends, it is not clear whether the U.S. will continue to do so in future.
