The USS Hawaii (SSN 776), a US Virginia-class submarine, has arrived at HMAS Stirling in Western Australia. This historic visit marks the first Submarine Tendered Maintenance Period (STMP) in Australia, demonstrating the expanding partnership between Australia, the United States, and the United Kingdom.

The STMP will involve Australian and U.S. forces operating together at HMAS Stirling.

The USS Hawaii is accompanied by the USS Emory S. Land (AS 39), a U.S. service ship outfitted with the tools and staff required for major submarine maintenance activities.

The STMP is the first time that Australian personnel will be actively involved in the maintenance of a nuclear-powered submarine within Australia.

Since January 2024, almost 30 Australian Navy officers and sailors have been stationed aboard the USS Emory S. Land, acquiring essential experience in nuclear submarine maintenance. The USS Hawaii crew includes an Australian officer from the Royal Australian Navy who was trained in the United States.

The maintenance work recalls World War II practices when the U.S. Navy performed similar maintenance operations in Fremantle on submarines from the US, UK, and Dutch navies.

The STMP is a practical demonstration of progress under the AUKUS Pathway, highlighting the value of collaborative training and interoperability among partners.

It also offers a unique chance to enhance Australia’s technical expertise in radiological controls, waste management, and emergency response without transferring radioactive material ashore.

The activity contributes to the overall goal of preparing Australia for the Submarine Rotational Force-West (SRF-West), scheduled to begin in 2027.

The rotational presence at HMAS Stirling will include one UK Astute-class and up to four US Virginia-class submarines, enhancing Australia’s ability to operate and sustain a future fleet of conventionally armed, nuclear-powered submarines.
