One Of The World’s Largest Warships Docks In Singapore On Way To The Middle East
The U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt arrived in Singapore on Friday with its strike group for a port visit, before heading to the Middle East.
The visit was first reported by USNI News, which said that the group includes a cruiser and two destroyers apart from the carrier.
The Nimitz-class carrier is among the largest warships in the world. Two of the escorts docked at Changi Naval Base, while the third escort berthed at Sembawang.
Once the port call ends, the strike group is expected to sail through the Malacca Strait, which connects the South China Sea to the Indian Ocean.
The Roosevelt is expected to relieve the USS George Washington carrier strike group, which has been operating in the Middle East since August 19.
It left San Diego quietly in late September and first went to the Western Pacific, where it exercised with Japanese naval forces in the Philippine Sea and South China Sea last week.
Such port visits allow crews to rest and ships to take on supplies and fuel before the next leg of a long deployment.
According to reports citing a U.S. official, the group would not reach the Middle East before mid-November.
Reports suggest that two other U.S. carrier strike groups are already operating in the region. However, USNI News noted that it is unclear whether the U.S. would keep three carriers there for long.
