U.S Navy Reveals New Concept To Counter China’s A2/AD Strategy In Contested Indo-Pacific

The US Navy has launched an operating vision to counter growing Chinese maritime anti-access/area-denial (A2/AD) ability. Its Distributed Maritime Operations (abbreviated DMO) technique urges the navy to disperse war vessels over a gigantic area in case of a maritime dispute with Beijing.

Accomplishing this will help make it more difficult for the adversaries to notice and target American assets while allowing navy units to operate cooperatively. Such a unique operating concept spreads sensors and weapons strategically across vessels and aircraft to reduce the risks of being targeted immediately. The DMO was created to recognize China’s capability to limit the maritime freedom of Washington action by using its smart anti-ship missiles, sea mines, as well as other precision weapons.

Unmanned Systems and Resilient Comms

A report informing US legislators of the DMO’s strategy mentioned that the navy must be capable of utilizing resilient communication connections to support a broadly dispersed force. There should also be a coordinated battle that can resist attempts to attack communications networks and systems.

Besides, the Department of the Navy wishes to increase the use of unmanned systems and long-range weapons in probable conflict with China. The US government has embarked on several key acquisitions to support this strategy, including a large and a medium unmanned surface vessel. Programs to acquire longer-ranged weapons, like the Long-Range Anti-Ship Missile and an anti-ship version of the Tomahawk cruise missile, are also underway, according to the report.

Growing Maritime Capabilities

Over the years, China has been bolstering its defence capabilities, including in the larger maritime domain. In January, China’s scientists reportedly tested a hypersonic projectile, which can impair enormous targets like warships as well as ports. Similar to “Dream Shell” abandoned by the US Navy, the weapon can be fired by electromagnetic guns at speeds that reach Mach 7. Beijing seeks to expand its naval cooperation with Russia by holding joint exercises, patrols, and skills competitions regularly.
