Stena RORO Expands E-Flexer Fleet With New Order From Chinese Shipyard

A Sweden-based shipping major, Stena RoRo, has reportedly ordered an advanced LNG dual-fuel RoPax (a roll-on/roll-off passenger vessel) from China’s shipbuilder CMI Jinling (Weihai). The vessel is enabled to operate on LNG as well as conventional marine fuels. It is expected to be delivered by the first quarter of 2026 and then chartered to the French ferry operator Corsica Linea to offer services between Corsica and Marseille.

The Chinese shipyard is constructing six vessels for the Stena RoRo, including four advanced LNG dual-fuel and two methanol-powered dual-fuel vessels. The vessels’ engines are multifuel, indicating that they may run on biodiesel, LNG, or conventional marine fuel (MGO). The ship will be built with the classification society notation “Battery power,” suggesting that they will ultimately be able to use batteries for propulsion.

According to Per Westling, MD of Stena RoRo, this vessel further develops the prior RoPax concepts, where the focus on sustainability and future-proofing has been a top priority.

The most significant and effective way to lower CO2 emissions through shipping shortly will be to order new ships built and tuned with multifuel engines and battery hybrid technology. Further enhancement and optimization of the vessel’s hull shape would also be in focus.

At the moment, Stena RoRo has 13 orders confirmed for E-Flexer vessels, as well as two unique “New Max” RoRo vessels, at the CMI Jinling shipyard based in China’s Weihai. Six vessels will be under construction at the same time at the shipyard. Thus far, nine have been successfully delivered.
