Vice Adm. Ikechukwu Ogalla, the Chief of Naval Staff, revealed on the weekend that the Nigerian Navy had taken possession of 803,353 barrels of crude oil valued at N105 billion during the previous year. He said that the Navy demolished 703 illicit processing facilities, apprehended 27 ships, and detained 232 people in the theft of crude oil.

The security chief, at a meeting with base commanders, principal staff officers, and flag officers commanding in Abuja, reviewed the operations of the previous year and reported that naval personnel had also apprehended five barges, 690 Cotonou boats loaded with stolen oil, 116-speed boats, as well as 82 cars/trucks.

MT Marine Express, MV Barge Ayeba Eneni, MT Ufuoma, MT Cecilia, MT Vigor I, FT Lamu I, and MT Vinnalaris I Lagos were among the vessels he mentioned as having been captured. As a result, 438 886 litres of gasoline, 2,472,200 litres of kerosene, and 46, 369,219 litres of diesel were found. Likewise 803, 353.20 barrels of crude oil were retrieved by the NN. Based on the prevailing market prices, the seizures amount to around N105 billion.

The NN has also been actively involved in the campaign against the trafficking of illegal narcotics, particularly in the marine sector. He said the NN had seized 692 bags of Cannabis Sativa between April and November this year, with a total estimated value of nearly N1 billion.

Per Ogalla, the arrests and seizures were the product of operational execution, planned strategic policy formulation, and tactical execution, not merely sporadic accomplishments. He advised staff members not to become complacent.

The thieves are cunning and versatile. They’ll adopt new technology, look for alternate paths, and alter their strategies. It is their responsibility to remain ahead of the curve, predict their movements, and retaliate against them with even more vigour. Furthermore, Ogalla said that the Nigerian Navy, which was under his command, would not tolerate oil thieves and threatened to deal with officers who were discovered to be working with criminal elements.

He pledged to supply the means and guidance required to combat crude oil theft in the country’s maritime sector.
The naval chief also commended President Bola Tinubu for extending the resources as well as moral support required by the Nigerian Navy to prevail.
